Leaders of the Spanish stock market by capitalization

Spain's leading companies not only operate but also hold leading positions in various sectors such as textiles, banking, energy, telecommunications and technology. Their combined market capitalization is equivalent to more than one third of the total value of the Spanish stock exchange (BME).

Iberdrola

Iberdrola (BME:IBE) is a leading global energy group in the wind power sector, ranking among the top five in the Spanish market in terms of market capitalization. The Group manages the production and commercialization of energy through its three business lines: renewable energy, networks and generation, and customer relations.

Nearly two-thirds (62%) of Iberdrola's generating capacity comes from renewables, and only 2% from coal.

As of October 20, 2021, Iberdrola's market capitalization represents approximately 5.6% of the total Spanish stock market and exceeds €60.65 billion.

Inditex

The Inditex Group (BME:ITX) was founded in 1985, combining companies created by Amancio Ortega, owner of one of the largest capitals in the world. Inditex is recognized internationally for its eight brands and mainly its flagship brand Zara and is considered the largest retailer in the textile industry in the world.

Inditex is the Spanish stock market leader in terms of market capitalization and conducts more than 50% of its business in the regions surrounding its headquarters in Arteixo, mainly Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Turkey. Reinvesting in the business remains a key driver of Inditex's strategy, which has allocated around €900 million for this purpose and €1 billion for digital investments for the period 2020-2022. Between 2013 and 2018, the company invested 2 billion exclusively in innovation and technology, the pillars of Inditex's success.

Inditex's market capitalization exceeds 98.45 billion euros, representing 9.1% of the total Spanish stock market.

Santander

Santander (BME:SAN) is the largest banking institution in Spain by market capitalization and the second largest in the European Union. The company is headquartered in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid). Santander is present in more than 15 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Chile, the United States, the United Kingdom and China, and has wholesale banking branches in ten countries and in more than 150 markets through correspondent banks.

The institution's activities are focused on three areas: commercial banking, corporate and institutional banking, and investment banking. The latter area is at the center of attention and is part of the institution's growth strategy, especially in the area of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) management. In addition, Santander is characterized by its commitment to innovation and technological development, having allocated 1,123 million euros for this purpose in 2020.

Santander's capitalization exceeds 58 billion euros and represents more than 5% of the total capitalization of the Spanish stock market.

Cellnex

Cellnex Telecom (BME:CLNX) is a leading wireless telecommunications operator in Europe. Its core businesses are its broadcast infrastructure, network services, and telecommunications infrastructure services segments, which are its main source of revenue.

The company provides access to wireless infrastructure to mobile operators and other broadband and telecommunications carriers, and is also engaged in the distribution and transmission of television (TV) and frequency modulated (FM) radio signals, among others.

Cellnex's market capitalization represents about 3.4% of the total Spanish stock market, exceeding €36 billion.

BBVA

BBVA Financial Group (BME:BBVA) is the second largest banking institution in Spain by capitalization. BBVA has a significant global market position with a presence in Europe, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, in more than 30 markets and serving over 80 million customers.

Despite its high diversification, the institution has managed to strengthen its name and credibility in the markets where it operates. BBVA manages financial services in lending, deposits and pensions and has more than 7,000 branches worldwide, more than half of which are concentrated in Spain and Mexico, which are its main sources of revenue.

BBVA has a market capitalization of 38.54 billion euros, or about 3.6% of the total stock market. Although BBVA is the second largest financial institution in the Spanish market, its market capitalization is currently 66% of Santander's, one risk factor is its large share in the Turkish market.
